When I bought the land for what is now Revana Estate, I had only visited Napa Valley once before, back in the mid-1970s. At the time, I was a medical resident and took a bus tour from San Francisco. There were very few wineries then, but I felt a strong connection to the area’s agricultural landscape, having grown up on a farm in India. I wasn’t a wine drinker at the time, but I was intrigued by the wine region.
To become a cardiologist, I had to make many sacrifices and remain focused on my studies until my training was complete. It wasn’t until I lived in Houston that I began drinking wine regularly after experiencing a bottle of Chateau Mouton that caught my attention. I started exploring wines in my free time. In Houston, I joined a private medical practice where I met fellow physicians who were wine collectors. Through them, I learned more about wine and began collecting first-growth Bordeaux. That’s when I realized how much I truly loved wine, and it became my hobby.
A trip to Tuscany turned the hobby into dreams of owning a vineyard, and in 1997, I returned to Napa Valley. I found a property on the West benchland in St. Helena and hired viticulturist Jim Barbour. I brought in winemaker Heidi Barrett, and together we produced our first vintage in 2001. It was crucial to me to control every aspect of the winemaking process to achieve my goal of making one of the best wines in the world. So, we began construction of the Revana Estate winery, which opened in 2004. Soon after, our 2007 Revana Estate Cabernet Sauvignon was named the #4 wine in the world by Wine Spectator.
